Romare Bearden, in his collage work, often used pieces of paper with images printed on them to make new images. I used one of Bearden’s images as the basis for a collage of cut-up newspapers. My impulse was the same as his: to make a new image out of existing ones. The difference may be that I am making an image of an image made of images. Bearden’s collages always feel timeless to me, whereas mine feels quotidian. That quotidian nature, however, feels like “now.”
